Advocacy Organizations

One of NCIV's primary member services is to orchestrate the advocacy efforts of the network and to educate the U.S. Congress and other public officials about the value of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program and other exchanges in general, and their positive impact on U.S. communities in particular. NCIV uses private funds so that several staff members can spend a portion of their time advancing this priority.

NCIV engages in these advocacy efforts to encourage sound policies and adequate resources for the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, other exchanges, and training programs in which our members play a pivotal role. By encouraging its members to partner effectively with elected officials at the local, state, and national levels, NCIV is building a stronger civil society in the United States. It is also promoting citizen diplomacy in the most fundamental way.

NCIV works individually and with coalitions to achieve our advocacy goals. The National Council for International Visitors is an active member of:

Alliance for International Educational
and Cultural Exchange

The Alliance is an association of more than 75 nonprofit organizations comprising the international educational and cultural exchange community in the United States. Their mission is to formulate and promote public policies that support the growth and well-being of international exchange links between the people of the United States and other nations. NCIV President Sherry Mueller serves on the organization’s Executive Committee.

COLEAD (Coalition for American Leadership Abroad)
COLEAD is a broad-based, nonprofit organization consisting of 50 member organizations that are dedicated to furthering well-informed public debate about international issues affecting U.S. interests and securing adequate resources to assure vigorous American engagement abroad. NCIV President Sherry Mueller serves as the Chair of the COLEAD Executive Committee.

Coalition for Citizen Diplomacy
The Coalition for Citizen Diplomacy, representing millions of volunteer citizen diplomats across the United States, promotes positive and sustainable international engagement of Americans through a wide range of international exchange and educational initiatives involving innovative public, private, and volunteer partnerships.

U.S. Global Leadership Campaign
The U.S. Global Leadership Campaign, a coalition of over 350 business and organizations, is dedicated to supporting a strong international affairs budget and promoting U.S. global engagement.
