Productive Interns, Staff Changes in Summer '08

NCIV was fortunate to have two talented interns join its team during summer 2008. Frank Kaszar and David Moore brought tremendous creativity and experience to the office, utilizing it not only to help the organization with a multitude of projects, but also to learn much about citizen diplomacy in the process. While David will return to college after a productive summer with NCIV, Frank will be staying in the office to replace Deborah Whang and take on the role of Program Associate, Membership and Training.

Anyone who has met Deborah knows that she has the unique ability to combine passion and determination and, in turn, has produced amazing results during her tenure with NCIV. Beginning as a program assistant and subsequently taking on the position of Program Associate, Membership and Training, a few months later, she has been integral to the success of recent national and regional meetings, Network DC, and all other membership related activities. She will be leaving NCIV to work for the American Bar Association and aspires to begin law school next fall.

Her replacement, Frank Kaszar, graduated from Saint Norbert College in 2006 with a degree in philosophy. He then worked as an English teacher in China for one year, an experience that demonstrated to him the many ways that citizen diplomacy can advance mutual understanding. As an NCIV intern, he has revitalized and updated old publications, created a new publication, assisted with speeches and surveys, and continues to explore the possibility of writing a children’s book to promote citizen diplomacy.

As the newest member of NCIV's staff, Frank is excited about the prospect of learning about the field of nonprofit international exchange. Outside of the office, his eclectic set of interests range from ethics to Sinology, gastronomy, and children’s literature.

NCIV's other summer intern, David Moore, is a rising junior at the University of Mary Washington where he studies International Affairs. He has a particular interest in the theory and practice of communications. He joined NCIV with a firm belief that only a constant, clear and genuine dialogue between peoples could lead to a more peaceful global society. His projects as an intern have included refurbishing old publications and directories, and he plans on continuing to help NCIV after his departure in developing an online marketing framework that would advance the concept of citizen diplomacy in the public mind.

During the academic year, David works vigorously both as a chapter leader and as the head of communications for Students Helping Honduras, a young and lively community development nonprofit founded by one of his college colleagues. Upon graduation he may work as a freelance internet marketing developer for small businesses and nonprofits while traveling across the country and world.
